Certificate of Professional Competence for managers (Passenger Transport)

The Learning Centre is an accredited OCR exam centre for the Certificate of Professional Competence (passenger transport ) and we can also provide training to support candidates. We provide you with the necessary materials to support your learning process and offer you the support you need on the following units:

Emergency First Aid Training

This 2 day training programme is classroom based and comprises both theory and practical teaching. The course includes:

  • Introduction to first aid
  • Care of the unconscious casualty
  • Resuscitation for adults, babies and children
  • Dealing with asthma patients, heart-attack, head injury, epileptic fits, etc
  • Controlled bleeding
  • Burns and scalds
  • Contents of first aid boxes
  • Reporting accidents and incidents

Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme (MiDAS)

This is to provide awareness of the legal, practical and safety issues surrounding minibus driving and passenger awareness, assistance and safety.  There are two modules – standard and accessible driver modules.  Drivers are awarded a certificate if successful, valid for 4 years.  A qualification recognised nationally by other MiDAS members

Course outline of standard & accessible driver modules:

  • Training on minibus equipment, safety issues and minibus law
  • Help to improve your driving skills
  • Assessment: to ensure you can drive safely; also given a:
  • Theory assessment – multiple choice, 80% pass mark
  • Practical Skills Assessment (for ‘accessible drivers’)
  • Assessment of your driving against a recognised standard
  • Improved driver confidence
  • Benefits that can transfer to driver own car driving

Course outline of standard module:

  • Driver licensing: What are you licensed to drive?
  • Driving for safety and economy
  • Walk-round Checks
  • Reversing and manoeuvring
  • Minibus law
  • Fitness to drive
  • Breakdowns, collisions and emergency evacuation
  • Theory assessment – multiple choice, straightforward

Course outline of accessible driver module:

  • Theory and background information
  • Practical demonstrations how to assist passengers who:
  • have walking difficulties
  • have partial sight or are blind or are deaf or hard of hearing
  • Demonstration and supervised practice assisting wheelchair users
  • Practical Skills Assessment - you show you can follow good practice:
  • use a passenger lift or ramp
  • secure wheelchair user in minibus

Passenger Assistant Training Scheme (PATS)

The programme offers job-specific skills in the area of passenger assistance to people wishing to work as Driver Carer or Passenger Assistant. The programme comprises of 4 core modules, which leads to an accredited qualification, PATs, awarded by the Community Transport Association (CTA).

The breakdown of the PATS modules is as follow:

  • Module A - The Role of the Passenger Assistant
  • Module B1 - Passenger Awareness and Assistance
  • Module B2 - Assisting Passengers who travel in their wheelchairs
  • Module C1- Supervising Children and Young People with Specials Needs
  • Module C2 - Working with Adults who Require Care and Supervision

Duration: 2 days PATS

Qualification: PATs Certificate awarded by CTA

Travel Training (TT)

This is a relatively new approach to supporting people with learning difficulties, who experience disadvantage through their inability to take up training or employment offered, not because of an inability to do the job or complete the training, but simply because of an inability to get there. Training young people with learning difficulties to travel independently, rather than providing expensive door-to-door transport, is an innovative approach to improving their long-term employability as well as promoting independence.

The long-term difference to lives includes improved confidence, enhanced social skills, better quality of life, feeling of well being, self-awareness of own safety and opportunities to contribute to service user surveys

The training delivered to Travel Trainers includes:

  • Skills /Risk Assessment
  • Basic Awareness training
  • Disability Awareness training
  • Route Research/ Route Plan
  • Systematic Travel Instructing
  • Passenger Assistant training
  • Emergency First Aid
